Starting our summer of fun the simple way – a morning in the park.

10 Jul

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far. When we got up after a sticky and uncomfortable night, I was thinking what to do. I asked Evie if she would like to go to the park. She said yes, could we go to Batley Park and I thought what a good idea!

The view accross the park

We’d been to Wilton Park in Batley last year and had a play on the playground and a walk up the hill and the wood to Bagshaw museum. We’d had a lovely time and were ready for some more fun yesterday.

We remembered the bread and set off.

Don't forget your bread!

We arrived at about 9.30 so it was fairly quiet and started with a walk around the huge lake. There were plenty of ducks and geese and other water birds and I can recommend an early visit to any duck pond as the ducks were hungry and came to eat the bread!

Feeding the ducks and geese Lovely morning

Evie loved feeding the ducks, Isaac had peaked too soon being awake at 6am and fell asleep on the way, but that was fine as I could lift him into the buggy and he had a nice snooze.

Too hot to do much but snooze for one little man

It was nice to see a family of ducks; the mummy duck had 6 huge ducklings with her and I thought she’d done well to have so many surviving! Similarly there was a goose family with some lovely big goslings not quite flown the nest.

Despite the fact that the park is situated on the busy Bradford Road, it was easy to forget that in the morning sun.

After throwing all the bread into the pond we completed our circle of the lake and headed for the playground.

Evie was getting really brave. The spiders web climbing frame that she couldn’t manage last year at the end of the summer caused her no problems today.

Around the edge of the playground is an outdoor gym if you fancy some exercise whilst the kids are playing and there was a buggy movers class about to start which I have always fancied doing but never actually got to one.

At the far end of the park to the playground there are tennis courts a cafe and much more but we didn’t make it over there and up the hill behind the park is the Bagshaw museum that we enjoyed visiting last year. It is also accessible from Howden Clough by road.

For the price of half a loaf of bread we had a lovely time. We’ll definitely be visiting again this summer as we start our busy summer of fun and I can’t wait!

The website for the park can be found here if you’d like to know more.

It looks like a perfect day, with some lovely pictures. And it always feels lovely when it’s relaxed and free, too, doesn’t it?!
